Building Extension Appeal - President's Message

The Sephardi Community of Melbourne, with some 20 ethnic backgrounds, is unique. During the 40 years of our existence we have faced and overcome many challenges, the most recent being the completion of a Synagogue for our growing community some 9 years ago. Since then the challenge we face is to retain and preserve our Heritage for the future.

With the appointment of Rabbi Cohen, a true Sephardi in all aspects of Jewish life, we have a teacher to pass on Sephardi education and values to our young and future generations. As we commence this program, we realize our current facility and ability to service this need requires our current Synagogue to undergo a transformation into a Resource Centre. The expansion we plan provides for:

  • Additional space for activities embracing Sephardi customs and traditions
  • Classrooms to host educational programs such as Bar and Bat Mitzvah classes, Sunday school
  • A large hall with a commercial size kitchen to enable community functions

    While this is a moderate expansion, we are a small community and our funds are limited.

    Your participation is vital if we are to succeed and ensure the continuity of our rich Heritage. Your generous contribution will be enshrined within our doors and will be a beacon to all those who grace our Centre in the years ahead.
