Building Extension Appeal - Rabbi's Message

To all our dear friends and supporters,

We are pleased to announce that we have begun preparations for the renovation of the ekhal and extension of the Synagogue. All who have attended our services are aware of the great need to enlarge and accommodate the growth of our congregation and to add to the increasing religious needs of all the Sephardim of Melbourne.

It has always been the priority of Sephardi Jews to facilitate their religious needs wherever they may be. We are proud to have been the first Sephardi Jews to establish a Sephardi Synagogue in Melbourne where Jews from Singapore, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Baghdad, India, Morocco, Israel and many other lands have settled. The success which Sephardi Jews of Melbourne have been blessed with is a direct result of their dedication to their Judaism despite being separated from the main Torah Centres of the world.

In recent times we have noticed a great need to extend the reach of Torah prayer and kind deeds to our elderly and very young children by enlarging the premises of the Synagogue so as to create a new space where the community would meet regularly and where regular classes for the young could be run.

It is with the utmost of humility that our humble congregation is now requesting the financial support of all those who have visited our Synagogue at one time or another and also from all of our overseas friends and supporters.

The Sephardi congregation of Melbourne calls upon the congregations of Singapore, Switzerland, Great Britain, North and South America and any other place in the world to contribute to the funds and the energy in order to extend the synagogue for the benefit of our children and of those families and children who may land on our shores and walk through the doors of our Synagogue.

May all of you be blessed and succeed in your endeavours for all days to come.

Respectfully yours,
Rabbi Y. Cohen
and the Committee of the Sephardi Association.

Three years later he was appointed Rabbi of the Johannesburg Sephardi Hebrew Congregation a synagogue of the Hebrew Order of David. He remained its spiritual head for 8 years.
In Australia, he took up the position of resident Rabbi of the Montefiore Home in Sydney and on the 1st February 2005 was appointed Rabbi of the Sassoon Yehuda Sephardi Synagogue in Melbourne.
Rabbi Cohen speaks 5 languages and uses this knowledge to communicate with his congregation. The Rabbi is committed to religious education and his aim is to provide the highest standard of Torah studies. His other goal is to teach Sephardi traditions and bring in traditional Sephardi services which are not only a link to past generations but also meaningful to the new ones. The Rabbi sees himself as a builder of bridges linking the past and the present to the future. The building of the extension of the synagogue will go a long way in providing for the future needs of our children and youth within the main building.
