1. Friday 9 October 2009 – Eve of Shmini Aatzeret
1) Minhah begins at 6:30pm; it will be followed by kabbalat Shabbat and Shmini Aatzeret Aarbit.
2) Light Shabbat Yom Tov candles at 7:13pm.

2. Shabbat 10 October 2009- Shmini Aatzeret
1) Shahrit begins at 9:00am, it will be followed by Mussaf & Kiddush.
2) Minhah begins at 7:15pm followed by Simhat Torah Aarbit, hakafot and refreshments.
3) Light Yom Tob candles after 8:12pm

3. Sunday 11 October 2009-Simhat Torah
1) Yom Tob Shahrit begins at 9am, followed by Mussaf, hakafot and refreshments.
2) Yom Tob ends at 8:13pm.

We invite you to register to play NOW as there are limited entries available and it is sure to fill-up quickly.

Steps to register:
1. Open registration form
2. Print
3. Complete the registration form with all details including payment – Please complete 1 registration per participant
4. Fax to 03 9532 7516.
5. A confirmation of registration and payment will be emailed to the nominated email address. NB: A limit of 128 players applies, with a first come first served basis.
6. Arrive on Sunday August 9 with your registration confirmation between 2pm-2.45pm to sign in and collect your participation pack. Round 1 begins at 3.00pm SHARP.
7. GOOD LUCK!

Tournament Format:

  • 128 Players
  • Total of 8 rounds, Knock out format from 2nd round – 1st /128 Players, 2nd/128 Players, 3rd/64 Players, 4th/32 Players, 5th/16 Players, 6th/8 Players (Qtr Finals), 7th/4 Players (Semi Finals), 8th/2 Players (Final)
  • Rounds 1 to 6, Matches will be decided by best of 5 games (i.e. first to 3 games)
  • Rounds 7 to 8, Matches will be decided by best of 7 games (i.e. first to 4 games)
  • Players can elect to use the doubling dice but only once per game.
  • Players can elect to forfeit the game to their opposition player.
  • 1st round practice. No Elimination.
  • 2nd round - Winners from the 1st round will play the losers from the 1st round thus giving an advantage to the better player and all participants play a minimum of 2 matches
  • Winner

    Tournament Rules:

  • All players must be registered to play and will be identified by their player number
  • All players are asked to be honest, respect their opposition, be patient and strictly no intimidation tactics. Poor sportsmanship, cheating or aggressive behaviour will result in immediate elimination.
  • Boards are provided and players are requested to respect the pieces including board, discs and dice.
  • To begin each game, each player throws a single dice. The highest number begins and MUST use the dice rolled to decide who begins
  • The dice can not be removed from the board until that player has completed all his moves.
  • A player can not change his move once he has removed his/her dice from the board.
  • A player can elect to use the double dice which will double to value of the game from 1 game to 2 games. If the opposition player elects not to decline the Double Challenge then he/she loses the game and a single game goes to the player instigating the double.
  • The game is decided when a player moves all the discs into the home.
  • A Gammon (2 games win) can occur when the opposition still has playing discs out of their own quarter.
  • A Backgammon (3 games win) can occur when the opposition still has playing discs in their opposition’s quarter.

    Tish’aa Be’Ab
    Fast of Tish’aa Be’Ab begins on Wednesday the 29th of July 2009 and ends on the next day Thursday at 5:59pm. Tish’aa Be’Ab Aarbit service will be held in our Synagogue on Wednesday evening at 6:30pm. It will be followed by the kinot /Lamentations songs and by the reading of Megillat Eichah.

    The Talmud Taanit 4 says: "On the Ninth of Av it was decreed on our fathers that they would not enter the Land of Israel (BaMidbar 14), the Temple was destroyed the first time and the second time, Beitar (the stronghold of the Bar Kochbah rebellion) was captured, and the city (of Jerusalem) was plowed under." Since, the Jewish nation suffered tragedy after tragedy, generation after generation. - Pictures here...

    Sephardi Cooking for the Ages.
    Sunday 12 July, 2009.
    The Sephardi Association of Victoria is excited to invite you to the 1st in a series of culinary journeys, which will take participants through the varied repertoire of the Sephardi world.
    From Morocco and Algeria, through Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt, to Persia, Iraq, the Arabian Peninsula and India, our traditional cuisine is full of variety, spice and joy de vivre.
    Our first event will be focused on the Judeo-Arab cuisine of Iraq, led and demonstrated by Iraqi gastronome Donald Lelah, and the Judeo-Berber cuisine of Algeria, led and demonstrated by Algerian gourmet David Laloum.
    The event will be a 2 hour workshop, including techniques and variations for a range of dishes, "tricks of the trade"... quick and easy methods, will be shown as well as the "ultimate" techniques for those who require perfection, finally the afternoon will finish with the group enjoyment of an Iraqi/Algerian mini-feast... (Recipes will be provided to all participants for the dishes and techniques used during the event)
    Number of attendees is strictly limited due to space constraints, so please book ahead to reserve your spot!

    Birkat Hahammah
    Please come on Wednesday Erev Pessah the 8th of April 2009 at 6:00am to the special morning service.
    Service will be followed by Birkat Hahammah/the blessing of the Sun which is recited once every 28 years (as the Sun returns to the position it occupied when it was created at the beginning of the fourth day of creation).
