The goals of the Sephardi Association of Victoria in building the Sassoon Yehuda Sephardi Synagogue and communal centre is to unite Victorian Sephardi Jewry in a permanent home in order to foster Sephardi heritage and culture. The Association was founded in order to serve the needs of the community into the 21st century.
The observance of the Sephardi traditions is the cornerstone of the Association and it is for this reason that sefarim were obtained from Baghdad and Singapore and more recently one scroll was written for the Association in Melbourne.
The new age of Australian multiculturalism has also affected the Association by attracting congregants from all parts of the globe. The Association now encompasses the wealth and charm of a variety of Sephardi traditions and the services also reflect this charm in the different melodies sung by the congregants during services.
The Sassoon Yehuda Sephardi Synagogue an arm of the Sephardi Association of Victoria is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue located in the heart of Melbourne's Orthodox Jewish community. It is in close proximity to all Kasher stores, Mikveh, Jewish schools and a kasher hotel a short walking distance away. At present, services are held regularly on Friday evenings, and Shabbat mornings, afternoons and evenings, as well as Sunday mornings, in addition to all Yom Tovim.
The Sephardi Association also sponsors a wide array of religious, educational and cultural programmes as well as a diverse range of social activities. |
